When I found out that my Erasmus Mundus Global Studies (EMGS) journey would begin in Vienna, I was beyond thrilled. The idea of studying in the ‘most liveable city in the world’ was exciting, but nothing could have prepared me for how immersive this experience would be. Now, having spent several months here, I can confidently say that Vienna is more than just a beautiful and historic city—it is a place that shapes and strengthens my academic journey in several ways.
As an EMGS student, my experience in Vienna has been deeply enriching, both academically and personally. The University of Vienna, with its vast academic heritage as the oldest university in the German-speaking world, provides an intellectually stimulating environment by encouraging multilateral dialogue. The coursework is rigorous yet rewarding, motivating students to engage with global issues through multiple perspectives. One of the standout aspects of the programme has been the diversity of my peers—we come from different academic backgrounds and nationalities, which makes classroom discussions incredibly dynamic. Our professors are specialists in their paradigms and yet, they are equally approachable mentors boosting independent research and discourse. Even through I faced some slight visa delays, the professors and university made every effort to support and aid through specially arranged online setups, helping me to stay calm and focused during this anxious time until I finally arrived in Vienna.
Beyond the academic sphere, my time in Vienna has been shaped by the city’s unique ability to blend history with modernity. Whether it’s studying in one of the grand historical libraries, attending thought-provoking lectures, or simply unwinding at a cozy café discussing geopolitics with classmates, every moment here feels academically fulfilling.
One of my favourite aspects of being an EMGS student in Vienna has been the opportunity to participate in academic events, networking sessions, and even informal student gatherings that deepen our understanding of global studies. As a student in the Erasmus Mundus Master in Global Studies, I have had the privilege of engaging in an esteemed international academic framework that fosters an interdisciplinary approach.
The University of Vienna offers various public lectures, workshops, and conferences where students engage with renowned scholars and practitioners in international relations, political science, and sociology. Studying alongside classmates from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds has fostered dynamic discussions and broadened my perspectives on global issues. My passion for learning about global history, the approach to writing it, and projecting future global trends has already augmented my research approach in the first semester. One of the most impactful block seminars I attended focused on conflicts in the Global South, specifically in Africa, which provided unprecedented insights into a novel region, its topographies, and regional geopolitical dynamics. These experiences not only complement our coursework but also provide valuable perspectives on real-world applications of global studies, reinforcing the value of this unique academic journey.
Reflecting on my journey so far, I am grateful for the way the University of Vienna has become an integral part of my academic growth. The EMGS program here is not just about attending lectures; it’s about being immersed in a community that, broadens your perspective, and prepares you for a global career. Studying in this city has reinforced my passion for global studies and has given me a fresh perspective on international dynamics— something I will carry forward into my future research and professional endeavours.
It, therefore, feels surreal to be studying here in Vienna. The city excites me every day, and the University ensures that excitement is duly catered to. There is so much that I am yet to explore, but I could not have asked for better. Through the EMGS Programme in Vienna, I am now closer to my aspirations than ever before!
I cannot wait to see how this journey unfolds!
